Should there be a map of 'the lands beyond'?

Make a map, but leave it player-created.

This is a companion to my previous thread and poll. I wanted the polls separated, but they both share a common element. One which is controversial at best, but which has so much potential to add to the communal story that is Rhydin.

Back on AOL there was a time when a large number of player created nations and kingdoms existed. These governments interacted on the forums, and eventually one player took it upon herself to make a map of all these little lands. She took up a call and players submitted their imagined borders, which she started filling in to make the first visual aide to the realms of Rhydin, the lands beyond the city.
This is the result: Realms of Rhydin

Personally, I think this added a great deal to the stories. Now we could see who bordered who, and the wars which sprung up now could be seen visually and logically.

I want to find out if there is enough want, need, or even support for lands beyond the city?
Are there players who run their own little country left?
Are there players who *want* to run a nation, but don't bother because there's little reason when you have no neighbors to taunt, threaten, or try to invade?

Just like laws, nations are a tool with great potential for abuse, but I think even greater potential for some really epic stories like the 'glory days'.
What do you think?

There is an unofficial map already in use.

This shows the city and where many of the other buildings are.

Yes, I'm aware of the city map, but what I was talking about is a map of lands outside the city. A way for players to set up larger real-estate and know where all the kingdoms, empires, and so on are located.

This was done once, many moons ago, and there were many good political and military storylines came just from knowing who your neighbors were.

We talked about this in RoH after we finished the RhyDin map. We were going to have a world map. But decided against it.

I've seen some of the old maps and to me they are too restricting. It didn't allow for growth. I would hate to see something like that again.

That's why we have an area on RoH called the RhyDin Atlas. There people can write about their kingdoms, talk about the specifics and give a general direction of where it's located. That works better than having an actual map.

RoH.. that's the fighting group affiliated with dragonsmark/RDI/Pharos, but not exactly a part of it, right? If the discussion is in RoH, that's probably why some people didn't know about it. Well, that's why I didn't know. I'm not even a part of that area, never go there, because I really didn't want to do the fighting activity so I didn't feel I had a need to be there or to look around. So whatever is there has been lost on me, and I'm probably not the only person who missed that. Guess there's more there then fighting. Kinda wish I'd realized that before because lands around RhyDin is something I would've been interested in knowing about a bit more clearly.

I would've voted for the map. I don't see how it could be any more or less constricting then the RhyDin City map itself. I enjoy the use of maps and it was kinda cool to be able to pick out a spot on the map and stake a claim to the spot. I suppose, though, that there are only so many spots that can be claimed... Still. The same is true no matter what the map is of. Guess I'll have to check out the RoH area some day, when I get time to visit yet another forum place.
